SRHR Hubs Response to Comments Made by the Ontario Education Minister

On August 28th, Ontario’s Education Minister Stephen Lecce made a number of worrisome comments in reference to the involvement of parents when students wish to change their name or pronouns at school. This comes at a time when New Brunswick and Saskatchewan are attempting to implement policies requiring parental consent for students under the age of 16 to change their name or pronouns at school.

You will not find the concept of “parental rights” in any Human Rights textbook, but you will find the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This fabricated set of “rights” is a reactionary dog whistle that emboldens hate, endangers children, and will have far-reaching impacts for the entire umbrella of 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities, even outside the school system.
